Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Cameras

The Canon CR-2 PLUS Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera provides Color and Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) imaging within a small compact design.

Geographic Atrophy, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and other conditions that can affect vision may also be identified and monitored using FAF mode. Using invisible infrared alignment light, the digital non-mydriatic camera may image patients with pupils as small as 3.3 mm (small pupil mode) without dilation drops. This is especially useful when performing retinal screenings or expediting routine retinal imaging exams during office visits.

Non-Mydriatic Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) Photography

Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) helps monitor macular waste (e.g. lipofuscin) which can accumulate in the Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) layer. The accumulation of macular waste can cause conditions such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) which can lead to reduced vision. The FAF mode may be selected by pressing only one button.

Camera has to have two specialized filters. The first filter in conjunction with the flash causes the fluorescence in the RPE to light up (exciter). The second filter is a barrier that blocks all other wave lengths allowing only the FAF image to come back to the camera. After capture the FAF image will appear as a silver grainy (red-free BW) look-ing image. Any structure in the eye without fluorescence will appear black while the rest of the image is silver. Objects in the image that will not light up are blood vessels, optic disc, blood, and dead cells. The blood vessels seen in an FAF image are actually non-reflectant shadows and not vessel images.

FAF imaging is the only imaging that will reveal the extent and type of AMD or Geographical Atrophy.

These images show AMD with hyper-fluorescent borders. The areas of white will advance. This cannot be seen in the color and red-free images. Fluorescein will not show this either.
